BD, it's time to disable new user registrations again.

The spambots are coming in fast and furious. Rolling Eyes

If you don't want to deactivate new registrations, rantbot, I volunteer to to help remove advertisements and bots if you like. If you wanted, you could perhaps set up a forum where volunteers could temporarily shunt suspicious posts until you have time/inclination to decide if they really are from bots and should be removed. Whatever you decide, if you want help, I have time for the next couple of months to help.

Methinks it's time to get some sort of filter for spambot registrations. I know other places have it but I don't really know much about how something like that would have to be coded or even how it works.

I can get rid of anyone who's "disruptive."

But I'm wary of falling into the LPSG trap of defining "disruptive" down so that it's synonymous with "pain-in-the-ass annoying" or even "mildly annoying."

What I've deleted so far (either deleting the posts, and/or squelching the member account so that no more similar posts will appear) are

i. obvious spam.

ii. repetitive posts - Specifically, one dick who posted the same message about thirty times, in different fora.

iii. weird posts - Long rambles obviously unrelated to the thread. These are the garbage we've been having lately.

iv. posts containing personal info - Things like real name, home address, work address, real-life nicknames, photos. Edited out by request of the subject.

v. really weird and offensive threads - Deleted by popular acclaim. It's only happened once so far - the thread was the infamous Targeting New or Current LPSG Members As Banned Members.

vi. special cases - very rare. I temporarily turned off one member's ability to send PMs, due to request of some of the recipients who found them annoying (I don't know the content of the messages myself), and turned off one member's ability to post avatars (more or less for the hell of it).

I occasionally get complaints about a poster being just generally annoying, but so far have let those go, as most of our membership have been around 'net fora for a while and can probably defend themselves without Admin intervention.

Sounds kinnnky. Is there a line? Where do I sign up?

I get the same spam requests on my website with the car show forms. Some days it's one or two blank forms... others it's 20.

I've turned off new registrations for a while. Some jerk keeps posting nonsense paragraphs and I'm tired of deleting them. After a while I imagine he'll go away and I'll allow new registrations again.

Current members should be unaffected.
Maybe you should go back to turning off new registrations there's plenty of jerks filing lately.
